Depending on the printer model, HP printers work best if you install hplip (the
HP Linux printing support) and use that to manage the CUPS printers.conf for
them -- you'll need that package for any of the all-in-one's or anything newer
about a year old. Older printers like the Laserjets with the JetDirect cards
should be defined as socket:// URIs, not IPP.

You'll have to look at the Lexmark printers -- most of the newer (last year or
two) speak IPP, but some had to be defined as lpr:// printers (note: lpR, not
lpD). Install the PPD files before you try to define printers (and restart
cupsd after copying the files).

If you want, you can send me the list of printers offlist, and I'll work out
what the best CUPS settings are for them. I probably have most of them lying
around -- I like messing with printers. 8-)
