We've looked at doing that (building an interface shim from the CMS VSAM API to one or more of the Linux DBMS servers) as well as a potential similar shim for the DB2/VM (SQL/DS VM) interfaces. It's not impossible, but it's not trivial either. At least for a while, CA had a product that did something like this, but I think it's no longer available.
