We ran into the "/root not found" issue too, and opened a bugzilla for it. The fix was to add a line to the PARM file for the install boot, as follows:
root=live:http://{hostname}/fedora/18/install.img This should point to the web server repository for the packages. I did the rest of the install successfully using VNC. -----Original Message----- From: Linux on 390 Port [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Mike Noel Sent: Thursday, April 25, 2013 10:24 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [LINUX-390] Fedora 18 for IBM System z 64bit official release Thanks Bruno, Your instructions match what I initially did. I used ESAME but got a dracut msg saying /dev/root not found (see https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=907322), probably 'cause the generic.prm on the iso (at least the one I downloaded) doesn't specify "root=". So I used a modified one as suggested in the bug report and got past that problem to the point where it says "Please ssh install@hf18". So I did, but it said it couldn't load the x server and gave me the options to use vnc or console. So I tried both those. vnc connected but just produced a black screen (and eventually disconnected), and I had problems trying to use the console ('dot' proceeding each response) to 'check' boxes in the following screens... You're saying I should be able to telnet in at that point (instead of X or VNC) and proceed in text mode without having to use "dot" responses? I'll try it!! Have to say this is a whole lot tougher than SLES installs...
