The version of Linux that will run largely depends on the hardware. What machine are you attempting to run this on? The other problem is the 5.3 eval edition. (Is that really still out there?) It was made available for the z10 and has never been updated for the newer hardware. It would be unpredictable how it would run on newer hardware, since z/VM would not have any support for that hardware.
