So you're saying you actually have evidence Linux is rebooting itself when you disconnect your session? If so - did you mess with inittab or something? Something gone haywire with the console (tty, etc)?
I'm very unclear on the actual symptoms.. reading your original post, I get the impression this only effects VPN users ... and now I'm confused.
