I checked with the HMC folks. Since the HMC no longer uses the DVD drive for backups, an LPAR can keep accessing the DVD until one of the various disconnecting events occurs. I think SYSTEM RESET and LOAD CLEAR will also disconnect the implicit connection to the drive.
