It is not necessary -- I think most in this list would agree that the only time you want to IPL z/VM is when you apply CP maintenance or because of hardware changes... same with Linux (kernel or hw changes). Most of the systems I support have been up for many months. I go the opposite route -- my goal is to keep z/VM up as long as possible until I'm forced to bring it down or recycle it. The longer I can go the better I've done my job.
