This will not help you in your current situation. I always allocate a full mod3 volume as my root (boot) drive. After the system is built I fill the / directory with a dummy file such as KERNEL.DCSS.SEGMENT, that is all blanks but encrypted. It looks like a file with code it it. No one has been brave enough to delete this file.
When I do maintenance I delete this file, do the upgrade or maintenance and cleanup the / directory and recreate the KERNEL.DCSS.SEGMENT file. This keeps the other SU users who like to install products into the / under control as there is not enough space and they call and then are informed that they should be installing into /usr or /opt directories. I know some installer processes can't handle separate minidisks during install. They only check the size of / and disregard the fact that some directories might be on separate volumes. Usually that error is due to the size required for /usr. Cleaning the /lib/modules depends on what is in there. Indeed when old kernel files are present in /lib/modules and /boot then they might be removed but you need to be careful that they are indeed obsolete.
