Rob, we had a similar problem back in the middle of Dec. 2016. It was on a new HMC that came with a z13s that we had installed in the summer of 2016. We opened a ticket with IBM. They replaced it and that fixed it. Steve

We had a CE/FE/SE/someotherE-guy in this weekend to replace a PDU in our z114, and had him check out this problem with the HMC optical drive while he was here. He said, in short, whatever media we were using, it wasn't formatted for the HMC. I went out this week and cleaned out my local MicroCenter for DVD-RAM disks (-2-). I formatted one with a label on my PC (ASUS USB-connected DVD burner; it says it handles DVD-RAM in its specs) and attempted to copy to it, but...no go. I reformatted it without a label, reformatted it as empty...nothing would allow me to write to it. So I went to the HMC and attempted to format it with the Format Media tool, and...HMC said it couldn't find any media in the drive. I flipped it over to the B-side...and got the same result. So I took the disk I hadn't done ANYTHING to, and tried to format it, or access it, or IPL from it...nothing was able to see the media in the drive. These DVD-RAM disks, btw, are Verbatim 4.7 GB per side, double-sided disks, for a total of 9.4GB, 3x/2x speed, whatever. None of the Format Media options that I tried worked; all said they couldn't see anything in the DVD drive. Is it time to open a hardware ticket?
