Right now, that is similar to what we are doing: zLinux FTPs a job to VSEn
which detaches the tape from Linux, mounts the needed tape, and re-attaches
the tape to Linux. It works but, as you point out, it is difficult to know
if the process worked or not. So, I'm looking for a solution which can be a
little less cumbersome.

It may get a little messy. If you are using any type of automations on z/VM,
you may be able to have the Linux guest message your automation system to
mount the tape on behalf of the guest. However, I am not sure how you would
communicate back to the guest that the mount has completed.

There's no provision in Linux to mount a 3590 tape by volid. You may be
able to use your tape management UI to manually load the (virtual) stacker
with the tape you want. "mt load" would then load the next tape in the
stacker.
