Say if you wanted to buy 100 of these machines.  Or 1000 of these
machines.  You couldn't really do it as easily.  Besides, why spend $75
for a machine for students in a school for example, when an old XT (which
is being discarded) can be used instead.

Also, if you've got say a dozen old XTs, you'll wanna get them to work.
If you don't want to get them to work, there's lots of people who will
quite gladly take it off your hands and get it to work.
