We've had this discussion not too long ago.  Early versions of PC-Xview
would run in 640K (but still claim to need a 286.  Still haven't gotten
around to trying it on my V30 machine.)  Early version of PC-Xview for
Windows would run under Win 3.0 in Standard Mode on a 286 with a couple 
MB.  If you can do it under windows, you can certainly do it under a 
real operating system.

I don't suppose you ever used X on an 8 MHz 68010 (like early Sun machines).
I wonder if it's still possible to get X10 or X11R<3 source code anywhere.
X wasn't always as bloated as it is now.
