I am pretty sure I compiled and set up lm_sensors as modules and didn't
have to patch anything. It seemed to work and report accurately
(relative to the BIOS).
Why is patching preferable?

Right, so it hints that you patch kernel, then install its modules,
where it hints at things like "this may or may not work on SMP
systems" and "it might give error messages but that's ok".
So in other words, light many candles, sacrifice a penguin, pick
one of about 10 kernel patches, and pray.
