Following up for the archives: It was not an IRQ issue.

Creative apparently recently changed the codec, or card revision
number, or some such nonsense, which breaks the 2.2.* kernel driver
for the es1371 boards.

Shifting to ALSA 0.5.2 fixed the problem; someone on this list (sorry,
forgot your name) reported that it is also fixed in 2.3.40.

How's the stablility on those 2.3.* kernels these days, anyway?
