Well, these four disks are not the only ones in the machine, there
is a hda (the main boot/root) and hdd (cdrom). hde is a caddy for
a mobile disk which is actually empty at this time.

I did not mention these details on the assumption that they are
irrelevant, not a smart thing to do...

So, only hdf is a slave with no master, and it is on the HPT370. I
understand that the error is on the HPT366 (which handles hda-d).

This rules out the masterless slave, right?

And I could stick a disk into the mobile rack and remove this variable
from the equation - I will do this now and see if it has any effect.
