Apple (and others) have had menu buttons in those locations for
a long time. And the reason is simple: it's faster and requires
less dexterity to position the mouse in a corner or against the
edge of the screen.
The Microsoft "Start" menu button copies the appearance of
those menus and buttons but fails to provide the same benefits:
it is surrounded by an inactive border so that positioning against
the screen edge doesn't let you activate it.
The "Start" button is therefore actually an example
of astounding incompetence on the part of Microsoft GUI designers.
(The analogous KDE buttons work correctly.)

What Gnome and KDE copy, as much as they legally can,
is the appearance and idiosyncracies of Microsoft GUIs because
that's what end users are used to and therefore requires the
minimum amount of retraining. But I can't actually think of
a genuinely good, novel idea that originated in the Microsoft
GUI that has been copied. Just about anything that appears
characteristically "MS Windows" either predates Windows or
is an idiosyncracy rather than an asset.

I think that's not even close. The NeXT was an attempt to marry
something like Smalltalk with something like a UNIX workstation and
with some pleasing visual appearance. The end product was interesting
in a pragmatic sort of way, well-implemented, and very useful, but
hardly "innovative" compared even to the Smalltalk and Lisp-based
systems from a decade earlier.

I think you are sincere. But I think it may be worth for you
to read up on, and experiment with, the GUI technologies of
the 70's and 80's. While modern GUIs look prettier, are more
colorful, and are a bit faster, technologically, I think they
have not advanced very much, either in terms of usability or
in terms of programmability.

And if you aren't aware that the 3270 has an embedded microprocessor
that is running IBM-written SOFTWARE, then you're quite naive.

You've never heard of embedded software withing hardware devices, have you.
Want to know the PRIMARY difference between IDE and SCSI hard drives?
The software in the ROM chips on the drive's circuit board.

You're saying that there's no embedded microprocessor in a 3270?
Seems strange, considering that the microprocessor was 10-year old
technology by the time the 3270 was released.

Limitations due to the idiotic programming of the embedded microprocessor
at the heart of a 3270 terminal.

No...the problem is that, for decades, IBM had a policy of "give the customer
ONLY just enough new functionality as is needed to induce them to upgrade....
never give them too much more functionality all at once...otherwise, you
might screw the salesmen (and the entire company) out of a whole upgrade
cycle...

Until IBM got a current CEO, their concern for customers' needs was hardly
any better than Microsoft's....

Because for DECADES, IBM put customer's needs last.
I have this on no less an authority than Thomas Watson, Jr,
in his autobiography in which he details exactly how
IBM ran it's data processing products side of the business.

Clue for the clueless: If you value your data, you *WILL* have the power
for this system running off of a battery backup arrangement.

I've seen a grand total of 5 lock-ups on any and all Unix/Linux variants
in the last 15 years.
That comes to about 3 years between lock-ups.
Mind you, I work with Unix/Linux EVERY DAY.

100 events among several million machines is a trifle.
Especially compared to the fact that most Windows boxes experience
hundreds or even THOUSANDS of lock-ups within their lifetimes.

"someone is watching you" is a suggestion specifically designed to

Aaron R. Kulkis
Unix Systems Engineer
DNRC Minister of all I survey
ICQ # 3056642
H: "Having found not one single carbon monoxide leak on the entire
premises, it is my belief, and Willard concurs, that the reason
you folks feel listless and disoriented is simply because
you are lazy, stupid people"
I: Loren Petrich's 2-week stubborn refusal to respond to the
challenge to describe even one philosophical difference
between himself and the communists demonstrates that, in fact,
Loren Petrich is a COMMUNIST ***hole
J: Other knee_jerk reactionaries: billh, david casey, redc1c4,
The retarded sisters: Raunchy (rauni) and Anencephielle (Enielle),
also known as old hags who've hit the wall....
A: The wise man is mocked by fools.
B: Jet Silverman plays the fool and spews out nonsense as a
method of sidetracking discussions which are headed in a
direction that she doesn't like.
C: Jet Silverman claims to have killfiled me.
D: Jet Silverman now follows me from newgroup to newsgroup
...despite (C) above.
E: Jet is not worthy of the time to compose a response until
her behavior improves.
F: Unit_4's "Kook hunt" reminds me of "Jimmy Baker's" harangues against
adultery while concurrently committing adultery with Tammy Hahn.
G: Knackos...you're a retard.
