Yes! I can make a 400k kernel to boot my diskless PC that is very
clean, lean and also mean. No fscking about with modules and I can cat
it straight to floppy.

If you have an NT server just try:

Start->Programs->Adminstrative Tools->Network Client Administrator

You can make a boot disk to install Windows 95 from an NT server - it
even launches the setup program from the NT share. If your card isn't
listed you simply need to put the NDIS driver on ths boot disk.

And I hear the same thing about Windows all the time.

Different strokes, different folks. Bad cliche, albeit an obvious
one for this situation.

Ask your favorite Mac user how great EXPLORER.EXE is -- it's the same
thing as KDE/GNOME for UNIX. Does that mean the Mac users are "blind"
as well? Hmmm.

multi-tasking, and interprocess communication facilities.

Linux has much nicer desktops than any commercial version of Unix (in fact,
Sun has actually thrown out CDE in favor of Gnome)....and Unix *IS* the
standard desktop for the automotive and aerospace industries...EVERYWHERE,
WORLDWIDE.

Not to mention S/390 systems, which blow the doors off *anything* x86
can do (and, since Windows only runs on x86....).

Sure looks like it is trying to be like Windows to me. If that were
not the case why not just leave the gui as it was 4 years ago with
fwvm and CDESim and such?

Why are the improvements to Linux mostly in the gui area?

No. You may hope that Linux is not trying for that market but the
movers and shakers with the money riding on Linux sure are hoping it
is.

No a blind man (the Linux users) see a bunch of pixels on the screen
and this is what he focus's his attention on.

A user sees an entire Window on the screen filled with his
applications.

A concept that seems to be foreign to the Penguinista's.

>Well Bernie. Don't get me wrong but it seems to me if they suspect your
>armed they won't be around anywho.

So does it seem to you like those would-be muggers were to do instead?
Do you suppose they specialise in mugging scantily clad women at the beach,
and exotic dancers who can't be bothered to put on a coat after their show?
It's not like many people think "oh, well, I could go get a job. Or I could
just mug someone. Hmmm, hard choice. Which one shall it be. Can't decide".

The criminals are not going away. And if they want to, they will even be
armed. And if they really want to, they will even be armed with a firearm,
although around here, a decent knife (*decent*, I said. That's not a knife.
*This* is a knife :), a syringe, snake, knucklebuster or baseball bat seems
to do the trick.

Now, when confronted with someone like that, I'd much rather have them feel
at ease then on knife's edge. The simple act of mugging is probably flooding
their blood with adrenalin already, I really don't want them to worry about
whether I am grabbing my wallet or a concealed weapon.

>And I do suggest going to the range to learn how to shoot that thing if
>you buy it.

Oh, of course. But the fact remains --- unless you are willing to do what
one US citizen did on the subway, which is to just shoot everyone you feel
potentially threatened by, you end up *re*acting in a mugging. You are not
the person who starts the interaction, nor the person who controls it.
In that situation, you are at an inherently inferior position; And you can
bet that you are not the only one who learned "how to shoot that thing".

>BTW, if you get shot in the guts your going to die, gunless or not.

Exactly. Which is why I want the person who has the gun pointed at my guts
to be at ease. It's not like she has anything to fear from me. I am more than
willing to hand over my wallet, and if she so desires, even my car keys
(although that would be a stupid thing to steal --- not much use in a getaway
car that one cannot start, and which also stands out like a sore thumb).

I am not going to try and shoot someone who is mugging me. I am not even
going to argue, or to wisecrack, or do *anything* to upset them. I like
living.

>Might as well have one.

What good is it going to do me.

>At least you can say you died trying to live.

I'd much rather say I was mugged and didn't get shot. Plain and simple.

Of course, I have never been mugged, assaulted or in any other way
violently attacked. When I got myself into situations where something
like that had a better chance of happening than around home (Germany),
like hitchhiking through Eastern Europe and Spain in the middle of the
night, I did so with the implicit understanding that anything I had
on me was dispensable and replacable. Heck, I even bought a crappy used
camera for hitchhiking all the way around the Baltic, because I fully
expected to have at least some things stolen. Got stuck with the stupid
thing for *years*, until I finally drenched it in pineapple-flavoured
milk and had an excuse for buying a decent one ;-)

Let me ask a simple question --- would you rather escape from a mugging
having shot the mugger, or would you rather have her caught by the cops
two weeks later, and of course with your wallet's contents long gone?

It's a Microchannel based IBM PS/2 with non standard hardware. The
SCSI cables use IBM Proprietory mini 68 pin connectors (not the
standard ones) and an abortion of an adapter on the internal one.

The SCSI adapters, while built by name brand vendors (Future
Domain/Adaptec) use IBM proprietor BIOS's on them and have trouble
working with non-IBM drives.

Try buying cards for it and see how standard it is :(
