Police move to tackle huge rise in gun crime
By Ian Burrell, Home Affairs Correspendent

15 January 2001

A national firearms database is to be established for the first time,
amid fears over record levels of gun crime.

The setting up of the database, recommended by the official inquiry into
the Dunblane massacre of 1996, comes as a report by senior criminal
intelligence officers has uncovered "major weaknesses" in the way
British police tackle gun crime. For the past 11 months, a team of
officers from the National Criminal Intelligence Service has compiled
details of weapons and ammunition seized by the police and has concluded
that the scale of Britain's black market in firearms is "far higher than
anybody had previously thought".

One in three young criminals is armed

Government research shows use of guns is on the rise and gangster films
are blamed for making it seem 'cool'

Special report: gun violence in Britain

Tony Thompson
Sunday September 3, 2000

One in three criminals under the age of 25 owns or has access to a
firearm, the Government's researchers have discovered.
A continuing parliamentary inquiry into the growing number of black
market weapons has concluded that there are more than three million
illegally held fireahms in circulation - double the number believed to
have been held 10 years ago - and that criminals are more willing than
ever to use them.

: that's a good one.

Even that wouldn't be enough to prevent the OS company from retaining control.
Instead, you bust up the company into the apps and separate development tools
companies and _open source_ the OS. It was the OS that gave Microsoft its
power in the first place as all the apps have to run on an OS. That power has
to be permanently taken away, and court-ordered GNUing of Windows * is the
only way.

Not to mention that manufacturing guns in the basement is even
easier to do than making illicit drugs.

Since the weapons embargo to Yugoslavia, the manufacture of AK-47's
(full auto) has become a national cottage industry. Anybody with
a lathe, milling machine, press, or jig saw is in on the act.

Manufacturing cost per unit: US $30.

I never claimed I did. I just want someone to answer for why there
are so many vulnerabilities in SSH. I never claimed I was an expert,
I was merely citing other experts.

Somehow, someone attempted to pigeonhole me into that, but I've
maintained that I wasn't an expert all along.

I merely cite sources of other experts who have recorded and
demonstrated known vulnerabilities in SSH. Vulnerabilities that
STILL exist in a large number of installations.

Yes, those people should patch, but they don't.

What is being done to ensure that these people are receiving
the information they need to receive?

Many large-scale firewall products and other security-related
products have extensive mailing lists and customers notification
methods (including update-checkers) to ensure that the latest
updates have been applied to their security software.

Is there anything like this in SSH or OpenSSH?

If not, why not?
