In New Zealand, we hate large, bossy corporates that dictate what should happen, hence
the
reason why it never happen in New Zealand, it would be political suicide. Most tax
cuts of the
last 9 years have been for Jane and Joe average, not large corporates that produce
nothing.
With that being said, three companies come to mind, The Warehouse, Hubbards Foods and
Mainfreight are three companies that pay their taxes, treat there employees with
respect, and
still turn over a bloody reasonable profit. Those are examples of companies that New
Zealanders
like. Unfortunately, there is a bottom-kissing-cultural inbred in the Yankee brain
that makes
them put large corporates on pedestals (for those who don't know, its a small chair),
claiming
how great they are, an example of this idiocy would be Microsoft, how many, uneducated
idiots
still put Microsoft on a soap box claiming how great they are?
A couple of days ago, a brewer (DB Brewers), which is a multi-billion dollar company,
tried to
close down one of its manufacturing plants in the West Coast (in the South Island,
http://search.nzoom.com:9999/?NZoom+NZoomHTML+start0+quant10+search=Monteith for the
full
story), simply put, they were going to close down a very profitable plant just to save
20%, and
move the production of the "boutique" beer up to Auckland, the locals got pissed off,
and what
do you know, a nation wide boycott of DB Products, after 3 days, they (DB) changed
their tune,
and have agreed to keep the plant open.

And those that don't know how are left behind in the dirt. The US system is
obsessively money-oriented - more so than any other capatilist country.
I am not trying to argue for or against capatilism or communism - each
system has its advantages and disadvantages. But within these classes,
there is a wide range of attitudes and philosophies. Cuba is a communist
country which makes a great effort to care for its citizens - the USA is a
capatilist country which takes great care to disregard its citizens'
well-being entirely. After all, its a free country and a free market - if
you can't afford your medical bill, try a cheaper hospital. And if you
can't do that, you are free to choose a lifestyle with a high income so that
you can afford treatment (spot the flaw in this reasoning).
>I have observed nothing but squalor down

The US forces other countries to comply with their arrogant and petty
mallous towards Cuba. Yes, other countries can trade with Cuba, but the US
makes sure it costs them.
>So why hasn't the squalor been taken
>care of?
Um, because the US is trying to strangle the country? The US makes great
noises about its love of freedom, but it seems to be very keen on forcing
the rest of the world to follow its version of "freedom".

In the US, there is the *potential* to have a better life and more money
(same thing, really, in the US). Many people think it is worth the gamble,
and move there from all over the world, from both capatist and communist
countries. Most fail.

Where is your evidence that Castro is living a good lifestyle? In many
African countries (and in other parts of the world), the corruption is
obvious - while most of the people starve, the president ("democratically"
ellected by cutting off the hands of the opponent's supporters) lives in a
grand palace with great luxury. But somehow this is OK for the US (and
other western countries - Europe is not entirely blameless).

So Panama is very corrupt. What difference does that make to Cuba? Is
Panama capatalist or communist (or something else entirely)?

So, what's your point? Remember this phrase:
"Religion is the opium of the people" ---- Karl Marx
In a nut shell, "stop living in a world of fantasy, and get back to
concentrating on what is important on earth, in this life"

Thats what I thought. I had an older distro on my box but an app in X
froze up, so I alt-F1 to get a virtual terminal, logged in as root, did
a ps -ax and found the ID of that process and killed it. Logged out of
root, did an alt-F(?) (forgot) and back in to my original X gui and
everything was back again. Its one of the best features I've found and
not in any other O/S that I know of.
