I have 2.1.108 running all right on my Avanti, but I've tried to boot: 2.1.120 2.1.122 2.1.124 2.1.125 I've compiled these three with egcs 1.1b, but 2.1.108 which works was compiled with egcs 1.0.2 as patched in RedHat 5.1. Compiling the others with 1.0.2 is not an option because of ``unrecognizable insn'' compiler bugs, etc. All three hang. Unofrtunately, I've been a bad scientist and have not kept careful notes on the older kernels, but 2.1.125 hangs right after: Linux version 2.1.125 (carton@frannie) (gcc version egcs-2.91.57 19980901 (egcs-1.1 release)) #2 SMP Sat Oct 17 06:01:28 MDT 1998 Booting on Avanti using machine vector Avanti Command line: bootdevice=sda6 bootfile=vmlinux-2.1.125-2.gz root=/dev/sda5 console=ttyS0 setup_smp: 1 CPUs probed, cpu_present_map 0x1, boot_cpu_id 0 HWRPB cycle frequency bogus. Estimating... 166491820 Hz Since I've read reports of working 2.1.120 systems and of MILO-980602 on this list, I'm wondering if my rediculously old MILO might be involved. I am running milo-pre-2.0.31-3, the binary on gatekeeper, the one mentioned in the rediculously old MILO HOWTO. also, interestingly, 'make bootimage' is not working in 2.1.125. Any help would be appreciated, but mostly, Can someone point me to the source for the current version of MILO, the one that works? I did find ftp://gatekeeper.digital.com/pub/DEC/Linux-Alpha/Kernels/milo-avanti-980606 Which I tried, but it fails often with ...Fatal error, out of memory. When it does work, it thinks the .gz kernel is ``UNZIP: not a zipped file'' and then reports bad magic after a rediculous number of #'s. I don't even know what this MILO is and am not pleased that it doesn't come with source. I am not stupid, and I would like to attempt compiling it myself. If I understand the GPL correctly, the fact that MILO uses modified Linux source code guarantees me this priviledge, so the source must be around here somewhere. I'm sure Digital wouldn't distribute binaries illegally, so I must just be missing it. Where is the source code for the recent versions of MILO?
