So it is never been quite right as we do exactly the same thing in
2.2.14pre too.

In the meantime I suggest to keep the 2.2.x way so people will just run
2.3.30 fine ;). We can fix this without forbidding people to run the 2.3.x
tree fine.

Yes, sorry. I just forgot that the gcc align attribute pads the struct to
an aligned boundary. Mere mortals not using the elf section wouldn't be
very happy if gcc wouldn't pad to an aligned boundary ;).
