[ Article crossposted from upenn.linux,upenn.unix,upenn.super-users ]

[ Posted on 31 Jan 1999 05:10:25 GMT ]

Hello,

I am pleased to announce the creation of a new mailing list for use
by members of the greater Philadelphia community interested in
Linux and Unix issues that overlap with core Linux themes.
To subscribe to the list, send mail to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (please forgive the DNS
latency for the next few days).

The list is not intended to replace upenn.linux, but rather
to provide a more appropriate forum for dialogue that lends
itself better to another format. A mailing list will also
allow the involvement of a broader audience than University
students alone in the resolution of technical issues. Finally,
the list will serve an essential purpose in the upcoming UnPLUG
install-a-thon and technical seminar series (look for an announcement
within the next week). Both the install-a-thon and seminar series
will be open to all members of the public regardless of affiliation,
with a few specific exceptions.

The format will be informal. Suggested topics for the list (but by
no means all-inclusive), based on the expertise of the list moderators
and facilitators, are as follows:

        Administration/Programming
                - high level end-user support
                - esoteric administration issues
                - performance enhancement and optimization
                - hardware compatibility
                - scientific computing (particularly in computational
                  physics and structural biology/biophysics)
                - applications development and programming environment
                - discussions of unix internals at all levels of
                  experience

          Security
                - end-user support
                - network security: network firewalling, VPN
                                     implementation, IPSEC
                - host security:  secure programming, authorization;
                                  secure IPC strategies
                - full-disclosure discussions of implementation
                  vulnerabilities.

        Experimentation/Miscellaneous
                - amateur radio digital networks
                - IPv6 deployment and UnPLUG participation in 6BONE
                - open source, advocacy and public service
                - experimental modes

I have no idea what the activity level of this list will be; it may be
unused or heavily used according to the subscribers' needs. The list is
unmoderated, but subscriptions are generally moderated to prevent abuse.

The University of Pennsylvania Linux Users' Group is a loosely organized
grouping of individuals working with Linux. UnPLUG is not affiliated
with any University agency, nor does it receive any funding.

The following individuals have contributed _greatly_ in time and effort
to past UnPLUG activities or planning: Roman Gollent, Prof. Jack Siler,
John Parker, and Blake Mills. I apologize if I've left anyone out.

[ The German Unix User Group invites to the yearly
"Frhjahrsfachgesprch", a big Unix event in Cologne, Germany ]

in lockerer, zwangloser Atmosphre.

From: Joe Orton <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: sitecopy 0.4.0 - maintain remote web sites
Date: Fri, 5 Feb 1999 19:24:23 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

sitecopy is for easily maintaining remote web sites. The program will
upload files to the server which have changed locally, and delete
files from the server which have been removed locally, to keep the
remote site synchronized with the local site with a single command.

Version 0.4.0 is available now from the web site at:
    http://www.lyra.org/sitecopy/

This version brings:

        * Much improved FTP code - now, broken connections should be
reconnected on-the-fly. FTP uploads will be slightly faster, too.
        * Signal handling - if you kill sitecopy during a site update,
        the progress is saved.
        * 'Flat listing' mode: -ll gives an easily-parseable listing of
changes to a site. An example AWK script to produce a
'Recent Changes'-type HTML page is supplied, changes.awk
        * Do-to-all-sites option: -a on all the command line.
        * Misc: improved debugging, FTP non-pasv mode option is really
selectable from the rcfile this time, man page has content,
errors in rcfile reported, update mode is paranoid.

Experimental new features which probably won't work at all for you:

        * 'fetch' mode - to update what sitecopy thinks is on the
remote site using what is actually on the remote site. (FTP only)
        * 'synchronize' mode - to update the LOCAL site from the REMOTE
site. sitecopy's reverse gear... use with care. (FTP only)

Check the man page or README file for more information on new and old
features.

Let me know if you do anything nice with -ll mode.

A mailing list is available for sitecopy discussion - subscribe at
        http://www.lyra.org/mailman/listinfo/sitecopy/
or by e-mail to
        [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Many thanks to all those who provided feedback and advice on previous
versions. Please send bug reports, patches, questions etc. to the
mailing list at <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>.

We have posted the i386.rpm, src.rpm, and patches on our WWW site at
http://www.affinity-systems.ab.ca/software/ for several packages needed to
upgrade a stock Red Hat 5.2 system to Linux 2.2 series of kernels. These
should work on Red Hat 5.0, 5.1, and 5.2 but were compiled under Red Hat 5.2
and kernel 2.2.1.

Packages include are:

modutils-rhcn-2.1.121-1.i386.rpm
net-tools-rhcn-1.50-1.i386.rpm
procinfo-rhcn-16-1.i386.rpm
util-linux-rhcn-2.9h-1.i386.rpm

Please send bug reports to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
