[Please feel free to pass this to anyone you think may be interested.]
This is an announcement regarding the next meeting of the Southern Tier
of New York Linux User Group (STNY LUG).
It will be held at the offices of the ISP Spectra.Net. Direction details
are below. We will be conducting our own "Holy War" on a variety of topics.
We will be discussing the relative merits of Windowing Systems (fvwm, twm,
KDE, GNOME/Enlightenment) and shells (bash, sh, ksh, csh, tcsh, ash). We
might even break into "emacs vs vi" if we are feeling raucous!
The rest of the session will be the same old thing: laughing, eating, and
talking about all things computer, especially about Linux and Open Source
software.
Date: March 23, 1999
Time: 7 pm
Where: Spectra.Net
271 Main St.
Johnson City, NY 13790
Directions:
http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?Pyt=Tmap&addr=271+Main+St.&csz=Johnson+City%2C+NY&Get+Map=Get+Map
Come with ideas for future LUG activities, or with problems you are having with
your home/work system!
The current location for the STNY LUG web site can be seen here:
http://home.stny.lrun.com/avatar/LUG
but it will be moving (soon, hopefully) to

Subject: Gsh 0.0.12 - Graphical shell
Date: Wed, 17 Mar 1999 19:21:36 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Gsh is designed to do two things:
1) be a comfortable environment for people who are already accustomed
to using a Unix shell.
2) make operations that are difficult or awkward with a normal shell
easier by having the shell take advantage of a graphical environment.
Some of the features include:
* context sensitive popup menu that gives you a list of commands based
on what is currently selected.
* user confurable menu for commonly used commands.
* the ability to run multiple commands simultaneously and keep the
output separate.
* special colors that differentiate commands from output; running
commands from completed commands; etc.
Please visit the Gsh Home Page at
http://personal.atl.bellsouth.net/atl/v/c/vcato/gsh/
This is the first development release of Gsh. It is being developed
under Linux, but has also been tested to some extent under Irix. I am
interested in making it usable under any Unix-like system. Gsh is
distributed under the GPL.

kbd-0.99 was just put the usual places.
(sunsite is now metalab and is fine;
tsx-11 still has a full disk;
ftp.win.tue.nl is unreachable;
ftp.cwi.nl:/pub/aeb/kbd is OK today but will be down for maintenance tomorrow;
ftp.*.kernel.org is fine)
No significant things changed, but kbd (and util-linux) were provided
with national language support, and now need translations for their
messages. There are preliminary versions of the Dutch and Russian messages.
This NLS is completely untested of course.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
CurveSoft is pleased to announce the release of TclPresents under the
terms and conditions of the GNU General Public License as published by
the Free Software Foundation. Get it from:
http://www.curvesoft.com/tools.html
TclPresents is a pure Tcl/Tk package for doing simple presentations
using the Tk canvas widget.
It allows you to display pages of text with itemized lists and supports
a variety of styles for numbering the list items. It can be used for
very effective presentations since the full power of Tcl canvas graphics
commands are available for display of complex graphics, simple
animations etc.
The distribution includes a sample 3-page presentation where the Tk
canvas graphics commands are used to paint a nice decorative frame
around each page.
TclPresents is not WYSIWYG: The page descriptions must be typed into a
separate file with a text editor using HTML-style tags. Some knowledge
of Tcl/Tk is probably essential for using TclPresents effectively.
Please send all comments, suggestions for improvements etc. to:

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Hi there.
This is to announce the general availability of the above CD's, as
follows
Linux Kernel Archives Volumes 1 & 2
This is a two CD set containing all known Linux kernel release
tarballs from v0.01 through v2.1.83 that can still be found (or at
least, those that I have managed to find so far).
Note that a full list of kernel tarballs known to have been released
can be viewed at the following URL, which also contains payment
details:
http://www.memalpha.cx/kernel.versions.html
Be warned in advance that the above document is around 150k in size,
and it does NOT contain any graphics images - its length is simply due
to the number of kernel tarballs and patch files that have been
released in the last eight years...
Please also note that volume 3 is NOT currently available, simply
because I don't currently have enough hard disk space to put it
together ready for burning, but I expect to remedy that situation in
mid-April...
Best wishes from Riley.
+----------------------------------------------------------------------+
There is something frustrating about the quality and speed of Linux
development, ie., the quality is too high and the speed is too high,
in other words, I can implement this XXXX feature, but I bet someone
else has already done so and is just about to release their patch.
