Virtual Linux User' Group: http://www.vlug.com
VLUG is a completely virtual Linux Users Group, this means that
we do not have an actual physical location, but instead we meet
out there in cyberspace. Right now this is based on Internet
Relay Chat (IRC). There are many different IRC clients, but
BitchX is one of the best IMHO. We currently do not have a full
time channel setup, but we are on efnet on channel #vlug during
our meeting times. We will likely change this in the future when
we set up our own IRC server.
Weekly Schedule:
Currently we meet every Wednesday and Sunday at 8:00 pm CST. You
can find us on EfNet in channel #vlug.

The `mconv' package converts files between the Monochrome BBS file and menu
formats and plain text, ANSI colour text, and HTML, and incorporates a
file/menu viewer called `mview'.
A bulletin board system, `mbbs' - built from the same code as `mview' - is
included, along with the utilities `mgid', `mtrunc' and `mtime'.
These can be used as a full-screen logfile viewer, an organisational tool, or
even a fully fledged multi-user bulletin board system. The conversion utility
also allows scrollback buffers, such as those produced by `screen' session
logs, to be read easily.
For more information see http://www.cus.umist.ac.uk/~ivarch/linux/mconv/
LSM entry follows:
Begin3
Title: mconv
Version: 1.08
Entered-date: 20APR99
Description: A fully functional BBS working as an overlay on top of the
UNIX file system. Includes several utilities for the
conversion of Monochrome BBS attributes to plain text, ANSI
colour text and HTML, as well as converting session logs and
scrollback buffers to Monochrome BBS attribute format, where
it can be viewed in the BBS or in the included standalone
file viewer. Aside from the BBS itself, the file / menu
viewer is a handy organisational tool as well as being a
good general-purpose viewer of text files and "screen"
scrollback buffers and logs.
Keywords: text, Monochrome, BBS, log viewer, scrollback, menu system

Subject: COMMERCIAL: Accelerated-X supports new chipsets, adds support for more
Date: Sun, 2 May 1999 11:22:22 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Accelerated-X 5.0 has recently been updated with new support for chips
or to explicitly support some boards using previously supported chips.
New:
3Dlabs Permedia 2v (Appian Jeronimo Pro 8M 4 head board)
Additional support for:
Diamond Speedstar A50 8M (SiS 6326)
Diamond Monster Fusion PCI, Guillemot Phoenix Maxi Gamer 16MB,
Creative 3D Blaster Banshee 16MB (3dfx Voodoo Banshee)
Dell Inspiron 3500 (NeoMagic 256AV)
The updates are for the Multi-head, Laptop and standard desktop X
servers. The update files are found in:
ftp://ftp.xig.com/pub/updates/accelx/laptop/5.0
ftp://ftp.xig.com/pub/updates/accelx/desktop/5.0/intel
ftp://ftp.xig.com/pub/updates/accelx/multihead/5.0
In each directory an INDEX file describes all the updates available.
+++3Dlabs Permedia 2v
This is a variant of the 3Dlabs Permedia 2. After the update has been
applied, the Permedia 2v is recognised by Plug and Play probing for
configuration, and can be configured as a generic 3Dlabs Permedia 2
based board. Benchmarks for Accelerated-X are given below. XFree86
does not appear to offer support for the Permedia 2v, so no benchmark
can be quoted. Results were obtained using a Pentium II/350MHz system
with 100MHz Front Side Bus and AGP 2x sideband supported.
Accelerated-X 5.0
Board Depth
8bpp 16bpp 24bpp
AccelSTAR II 24 21 18
ELSA Synergy 24 21 17
Support for a multi-headed board from Appian has been added to
Multi-head Accelerated-X 5.0. The Appian Jeronimo Pro board supports 4
attached displays, each with its own Permedia 2v. The Permedia 2V will
be supported by the Accelerated-X OpenGL Tech Demo Evolution 2.
+++Diamond SpeedStar A50 8M (SiS 6326)
The SiS 6326 has been supported for many months. This update adds
explicit support for the Diamond SpeedStar A50 8M board. Benchmarks for
Accelerated-X are given below. The XFree86 Project offers generic
support for the 6326, but the XFree86 X server 3.3.3.1 for the SiS 6326
does not appear to work with the Diamond SpeedStar A50.
Server Depth
8bpp 16bpp 24bpp
Accelerated-X 5.0 17 13 10
The SiS 6326 is aleady supported by the Accelerated-X OpenGL Tech Demo
Evolution 1.
+++3dfx Voodoo Banshee (Diamond Monster Fusion AGP, Guillemot Phoenix
Maxi Gamer, Creative 3D Blaster, Pace 3D Edge)
The Voodoo Banshee was recently added as a supported graphics chip.
Initially, support was limited to the Diamond Monster Fusion AGP. This
update adds explicit board entries for several other Voodoo Banshee
boards, slightly improves the speed on the Diamond Monster Fusion AGP
and makes the generic support likely to work on any Voodoo Banshee
implementation. The 3dfx Voodoo Banshee is available in AGP and PCI
versions, some with (faster) SGRAM and some with (slower) SDRAM. There
are also different speeds of memory used with the Voodoo Banshee.
Although the Diamond Monster Fusion AGP is the fastest board currently
supported by Accelerated-X 5.0, other implementations of the Voodoo
Banshee may offer speeds lower than the Matrox G200, number two in our
benchmarks.
The benchmarks given below were extracted from a Pentium II/350MHz
system with 100MHz FSB and AGP 2x support. There is no support for the
Voodoo Banshee from the XFree86 Project, but http://linux3d.org offers a
beta version, which will eventually be folded into XFree86 4.0. The
author has stated in private email that the performance of his X server
should be increased by the final release of his X server.
Board Server Depth
8bpp 16bpp 24bpp
Diamond Mon Fus AGP Accelerated-X 5.0 44 38 32
Linux3D.org Beta 18 15 8
Guillemot Maxi Gamer Accelerated-X 5.0 42 36 31
Linux3D.org Beta 17 14 7
Creative 3D Blaster Accelerated-X 5.0 40 34 29
Linux3D.org Beta Server inoperable
Resolution/refresh tested 1280x1024@85Hz 1280x1024@75Hz
1280x1024@85Hz
Support for the 3dfx Voodoo Banshee in the Accelerated-X server does not
imply that the Voodoo Banshee will be supported by future Accelerated-X
Hardware Accelerated OpenGL implementations. 3dfx Voodoo 3 based boards
are not supported by the Voodoo Banshee update.
+++Dell Inspiron 3500 (NeoMagic 256AV)
The NeoMagic 256AV has been supported for many months. This update adds
explicit support for the implementation on the Dell Inspiron 3500. The
benchmarks were obtained on the Dell Inspiron 3500 at full internal
screen resolution. Hot Key switching between internal and external
displays is supported, with seperate configuration of internal and
external displays. APM is supported with display recovery after sleep.
Server Depth
24bpp
Accelerated-X 5.0 9.5
XF86_SVGA 3.3.3.1 2.3
There is also a general Laptop Accelerated-X update to correct a problem
handling the APM daemon.
Cheers, JeremyC.

Subject: Announcing Emacspeak-10.0 (WonderDog)
Date: Sun, 2 May 1999 11:26:51 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Announcing Emacspeak-10.0 (WonderDog).
--------------------------------------
For Immediate Release:
San Jose, Calif., (May 1, 1999)
Emacspeak-2000: Opening Doors To A Windows-Free 2000.
--Zero cost of ownership makes priceless software affordable!
Emacspeak is a fully functional audio desktop that provides
complete eyes-free access to all major 32 and 64 bit
operating environments. By seamlessly blending all aspects of
the Internet such as Web-surfing and electronic messaging
into the audio desktop, Emacspeak enables speech access to
local and remote information with a consistent and
well-integrated user interface.
Major Enhancements:
- -------------------
0) Single click Web search from anywhere on the audio desktop.
1) Simple DOM-based navigation of WWW pages
2) Enhanced support for nested HTML tables to further enhance Emacspeak's
already efficient navigation and browsing of structured and
multicolumn WWW pages.
3) Emacspeak 10.0 speech-enables all new features introduced in
the upcoming Emacs 20.4.
4) Includes Edition 2 of the Emacspeak Manual
See the NEWS file for additional details. The Emacspeak
source distribution now includes a structured FAQ list
designed to introduce new and old users to the Emacspeak
environment.
Opening Doors To A Windows-Free 2000:
- -------------------------------------
Emacspeak is now bundled with all major Linux distributions.
Extensive studies have shown that users consider Emacspeak
to be absolutely priceless. Thanks to this wide-spread user
demand, the present version is being made available at the
same zero cost as earlier releases. At the same time,
Emacspeak-2000 continues to innovate in the area of speech
interaction and carries forward the well-established Open
Source tradition of introducing user interface features that
eventually show up in commercial user environments. On this
theme, when recently challenged by a proponent of a
crash-prone but well-marketed windowing system with the
assertion "Emacs is a system from the 70's", the creator of
Emacspeak expressed surprize at the unusual candor manifest
in the assertion that it would take popular idiot-proof
interfaces until the year 2070 to catch up to where the
Emacspeak audio desktop is today. Upon hearing this, the
said proponent of the crash-prone system turned blue in the
face (screen), crashed to the floor and refused to get
booted (ever again).
Industry experts welcomed this refreshing breath of Courage
Certainty and Clarity (CCC) at a time when users are reeling
from the Fear Uncertainty and Doubt (FUD) unleashed by
complex software systems backed by even more convoluted
press releases.
History:
- --------
Emacspeak-10.0 --(AKA Emacspeak-2000) code named WonderDog--
is the latest in a series of award-winning software releases
designed to make eyes-free computing a productive and
pleasurable experience. Emacspeak-9.0 --(AKA Emacspeak 99)
code named BlackLab-- continued to innovate in the areas of
speech interaction and interactive accessibility.
Emacspeak-8.0 --(AKA Emacspeak-98++) code named BlackDog--
was a major upgrade to the speech output extension to Emacs.
Emacspeak-95 (code named Illinois) was released as
Open Source on the Internet in May 1995 as the first
complete speech interface to UNIX workstations. The
subsequent release, Emacspeak-96 (code named Egypt) made
available in May 1996 provided significant enhancements to
the interface. Emacspeak-97 (Tennessee) went further in
providing a true audio desktop. Emacspeak-98 integrated
Internetworking into all aspects of the audio desktop to
provide the first fully interactive speech-enabled WebTop.

Mandrake 6 Is Coming! Can you feel it?
- ------------------------------------
And you thought v5.3 was good! Circadian Software is pleased to announce
free upgrades to Linux Mandrake v6 with your purchase of any Linux Mandrake
PowerPack or GPL v5.3 package after May 1st! No hidden charges- all you have
to do is claim your free upgrade and we'll send you a Linux Mandrake System
CD v6. Easy, free.
Do you want the updated manuals as well? We also give you the option to
place a pre-order for Linux Mandrake v6 so you get it right when it comes
out - eliminating the chance of the inevitable "out-of-stock" delays. We'll
be the first distributor to get it in the United States - so you'll be the
first to get it on your block.

Version 6, built on the same components of RedHat v6, but with significant
usability enhancements, is expected to be on store shelves by mid-May.

Don't forget about our great Mandrake v5.3 GPL packages as well, priced as
low as $2.95!
__________
Unlike those other "mall" distributors, our packages are unsurpassed for
their quality, options and customer service. We ship out orders on the next
business day, and if you place your order before 7am, we will ship out your
order on the same day (Mon-Sat)!
And now, 25=A2 of each order will go towards supporting the Wildlife
Conservation Society to help protect the Chinstrap Penguin, the real-life
cousin of the icon "Tux" we have come to love.
For more information about the Chinstrap Penguin, please visit the Wildlife
Conservation Society's web site: http://www.wcs.org
