=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
A new snapshot of mGSTEP is now available. Screenshots, release
notes and of course the package are available at:
http://farz.home.mindspring.com/far.html
The URL to the package is:
ftp://farz.home.mindspring.com/users/farz/mgstep-0.144.tar.bz2
DESCRIPTION
The mGSTEP package is an attempt at creating a small lite
derivative of GNUstep. mGSTEP and GNUstep are clones of
NeXT's highly acclaimed NeXTSTEP/OPENSTEP(tm) graphical
user interface and Objective-C class libraries.
RELEASE NOTES
The more notable changes in this snapshot include an emulation
of PSrectclip() as well as an improved graphics state stack.
These two changes fix many of the existing drawing issues
and in general everything feels much more polished as a result.
Workspace received a bit more polish and is noticeably faster
in a couple of places. And of course there are the usual
variety of tweaks and bug fixes.
SUPPORTED PLATFORMS
mGSTEP can be built on i386 machines running NeXTSTEP/OPENSTEP
(built with NS3.2 dev tools), Linux (best platform) or WinNT.
Building the AppKit requires an X server and X headers/libraries.
Comments, bug reports and suggestions should be sent to:

Date: Thu, 15 Jul 1999 22:20:13 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
The fifth public beta release of the Common UNIX Printing System
("CUPS") is now available for download from the CUPS web site
at:
http://www.cups.org
Binaries for several platforms are also available!
The Common UNIX Printing System provides a portable printing
layer for UNIX operating systems. It has been developed by Easy
Software Products to promote a standard printing solution for
all UNIX vendors and users. CUPS provides the System V and
Berkeley command-line interfaces.
CUPS uses the Internet Printing Protocol (IETF-IPP) as the basis
for managing print jobs and queues. The Line Printer Daemon
(LPD, RFC1179), Server Message Block (SMB), and AppSocket
protocols are also supported with reduced functionality.
CUPS adds network printer browsing and PostScript Printer
Description ("PPD")-based printing options to support real world
applications under UNIX.
CUPS also includes a customized version of GNU GhostScript
(currently based off GNU GhostScript 4.03) and an image file RIP
that can be used to support non-PostScript printers.
Sample drivers are provided for HP DeskJet and LaserJet
printers. Drivers for over 1200 printers are available in our
ESP Print software.
CUPS is licensed under the GNU General Public License. Please
contact Easy Software Products for commercial support and
"binary distribution" rights.

Fifth issue of the "Brave GNU World", the
monthly GNU forum, is online now
-- Georg Greve
Hi !
The fifth issue of the "Brave GNU World" column is online
now. It can be found on the GNU Webpage and its mirrors
or dirctly by following the links at the end of this posting.
The "Brave GNU World" is a multilingual (English, German, French,
Japanese and Spanish) monthly column that provides information about
internal developments of the GNU Project and things of importance to
the GNU community, while trying to give insights into the underlying
philosophy. It is available online (see links below) or printed in
Germanys biggest GNU/Linux magazine, the "Linux Magazin".
If you would like to receive mail about new issues directly, you can
subscribe to the "Brave GNU World" announcement mailinglist now. Just
send mail to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> with "subscribe" in
the *body*. The mailinglist is only for announcements that are related
to the "Brave GNU World" and is of very low volume (between 1 and 4
mails a month).
The fifth issue covers the following topics:
* Licenses and Patents (why patenting software concepts is a bad idea)
* GNU Smalltalk (the Smalltalk-80 implementation of the
GNU Project)
* Xpplot (a nifty, small tool to visualize data)
This column intends to provide a forum for all GNU maintainers,
friends and associates and I am always open to suggestions. So if
you
* have questions about the GNU Project that might be of general
interest
* have a GNU Project and would like to improve its profile
* would like to start a GNU Project you are looking for people to
start it with
* think something doesn't get the publicity it deserves
* would like to see something made public
send mail to:
"Brave GNU World <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>"
I would like to address _especially_ the authors of small GPL or LGPL
licensed programs that are not officially part of the GNU Project.
This column is for everyone with an interest in Free Software
and I personally like to write about those small and relatively
unknown projects.

Trickster God and Yellow Dog to Deliver the Best of Games
Terra Soft Solutions and Loki Entertainment Software today announce a
strategic alliance to bring best-selling PC games to Linux on PowerPC
computers -- in some cases before those same games are available for the
MacOS.
Loki Entertainment Software has become a strong force in the gaming
industry, licensing MacOS and Windows games and porting them to the Linux
operating system. Terra Soft Solutions has quickly established itself as a
leader in the Linux for PowerPC arena. Through the partnership, Loki and
Terra Soft will combine their efforts to bring Linux games to PowerPC
computers.
Linux is compatible with a wide-variety of computer hardware, including
i386-based hardware manufactured by Intel, AMD and Cyrix, and
PowerPC-based hardware such as Apple Computer's iMac. Through this new
alliance, Loki will continue to license and port PC games to the Linux OS.
Terra Soft will work with Loki to develop PPC compatible versions based on
Loki's source code.
"We are thrilled to be working with Terra Soft to expand the universe of
applications for Linux on the PowerPC, stated Scott Draeker, President of
Loki. "The partnership we are announcing today ensures that PowerPC users
who install Linux will have access to the best games that the PC world has
to offer."
"This is a challenging opportunity. One that will keep us quite busy,"
states Stephen Edie, Software Engineer for Terra Soft. "My personal
background and one might say, my 'passion' is with gaming. Through my work
on porting the CMD 646 IDE driver for the Blue & Whites and ongoing work on
the graphical installer for Gone Home, I have become quite familiar with
the PowerPC architecture. I believe that Terra Soft's experience with the
PowerPC coupled with Loki's background is an incredible combination. It
allows each of us to do what we do best and provide games that may not
otherwise be available on the PowerPC."
In addition to working with Loki to bring Linux games to the PowerPC, Terra
Soft will soon offer game bundles with its Yellow Dog Linux Gone Home
distribution. Retail versions of Loki's games, which will include both the
i386 and PPC versions, will be available as stand alone products for sale
directly from Loki, Terra Soft and other software retailers.
Loki plans to bring a wide variety of games to Linux, including the most
popular action, adventure, and educational titles. Loki's current product
line includes Civilization: Call to Power, Myth II: Soulblighter, Railroad
Tycoon II Gold Edition, and Eric's Ultimate Solitaire. A total of 8 titles
are planned for release in 1999. Today's announcement ensures that all of
Loki's titles will be available for both i386 and PowerPC.

Subject: WWW: Linux Hardware Database and CompHardware.com partner

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
LhD: Linux Hardware Database and CompHardware.com partner on the Linux
Hardware Database
July 14, 1999
LhD (lhd.datapower.com) has announced a partnership with
CompHardware.com aimed at unifying the Linux hardware databases at the
two sites.
As part of the agreement, the contents of the hardware database at
CompHardware.com will be merged with LhD: Linux Hardware Database.
Linux hardware information will continue to be available on the
CompHardware.com site through LhD, and current registered CompHardware.com
users will be able to continue to use the same usernames and passwords.
The consolidation of the two databases brings ratings, product specific
reports, Linux driver information and other LhD features to
CompHardware.com users. LhD users will be able to conveniently access
CompHardware.com product reviews, optimization information and other
hardware related editorial content on a product basis. Kristopher
Kersey, the editor of CompHardware.com, commented: "We [CompHardware.com
and LhD] felt that having two separate databases was counterproductive.
Having a one-stop source for the database and then a seperate link to an
all out review should provide easier access to what Linux users need to
know."
The new agreement allows LhD to focus on the component database, user
reports and driver information and allows CompHardware.com to focus on
its core reviews, editorials and other hardware related content. It
also greatly benefits the Linux community by unifying two valuable
resources under one roof and coming closer to providing a single-stop
resource for Linux computer component information.
About Computer Hardware Information
CompHardware.com is the the first and only hardware web site to do Linux
reviews along side the standard Windows reviews on computer hardware.
The site has had a slow start but now with the partnership to DataPower's
database it will grow much faster with an even greater focus on quality
reviews.
About DataPower Technology
DataPower Technology, Inc. is a startup company in Cambridge,
Massachusetts which launched LhD: Linux Hardware Database
at http://lhd.datapower.com several months ago. The site is devoted to
product-based reports, ratings and workarounds for using hardware under
the Linux operating system. Because the database ties user commments,
ratings and driver information with a specific product record, it allows
visitors
to easily pull up all the information relevant to the PC components they
own or are planning to buy without wading through hundreds of search hits.

Hello,
After a long six month break , Linux Focus is back and better !
There have been a few changes these past few months, the
most significant one is that Miguel Angel Sepulveda has
stepped down as chief editor, and Guido Socher has taken the
helm of Linux Focus.
We welcome you to visit Linux Focus (http://www.linuxfocus.org)
and read our latest issue about our favorite operating system.
As always, we are looking for volunteers who would like to contribute
their time and talent to help the magazine. If you are interested
in helping, please contact Guido Socher ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
and join the Linux Focus family !
regards,
Jose Quesada
