Abstract

Storm Linux is a new Linux distribution from Stormix Technologies of
Vancouver. Based on the Debian GNU/Linux distribution, Storm Linux is
designed to be easy to use and simple to install. Its target market
includes both the server and the desktop. Depending on the installation
choices, a new user can be running Storm Linux in as little as fifteen
minutes. The alpha version of Storm Linux was released earlier this
month. The first production version is expected in the fourth quarter
of 1999.

For administrators, a key feature of Storm Linux is the Storm
Administration System (SAS). Designed for both local and secure remote
administration, SAS features a single code base for all administration
modules. By separating the application from the client interface, SAS
improves remote connectivity and allows for the quick creation of
graphical and text interfaces.

For end-users, Storm Linux includes a choice of text-based or graphical
X Window System installation, automatic or custom disk partitioning, KDE
or GNOME desktops, and recent versions of popular text and X Window
System programs, including XFree86 3.3.3.1, enlightenment 0.15.5, apt
3.7, and Netscape 4.6.

Stormix Technologies was founded in February 1999 with the goal of
providing the tools and applications that Linux needs to enter new
markets. Initial investors include David Talmor, NetNation
Communications Chairman and CEO, and Joseph Kibur, NetNation
Communications COO. "After using the Linux operating system to build a
world class web-site hosting service, we were convinced that Linux has
huge potential," Mr. Talmor says. "As a result, we decided to
establish a new company that focused specifically on the creation of a
powerful and user-friendly distribution of the operating system. That
distribution is Storm Linux."

Stormix Technologies is an independent company, and not directly
affiliated with NetNation Communications.

I have updated the Audio-Quality-HOWTO to version 0.0.6. This has lots
of contributions from readers, and a new URL:

http://www.ulster.net/~abigoo/pw_linux/Audio-Quality-HOWTO.html

So the URL may still be big and icky, but the banner ads are gone.

PLEASE TELL ME WHAT TO DO WITH THE PAGE. I'm not sure whether to keep it
as a web site, submit it to Jeff Tranter for inclusion into the HOWTO,
or make it into another LDP HOWTO. What best serves the community?
Please write and tell me!

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

I am happy to announce leafnode-1.9.3 which has been uploaded to
        ftp://wpxx02.toxi.uni-wuerzburg.de/pub/leafnode-1.9.3.tar.gz
and
        ftp://metalab.unc.edu/incoming/Linux/leafnode-1.9.3.tar.gz
Leafnode is a news server for small sites which is very easy to install
and maintain.

This is a maintenance release. Leafnode-1.9.3 fixes numerous bugs in 1.9.2
(see CHANGES for details) and has a few improvements which hopefully make
it work with an even wider range of clients and upstream servers. The
package now includes German documentation and part of the PCRE library
which makes it much larger than the previous releases (but also regexp
matching much faster).

Leafnode also has a home page at
        http://wpxx02.toxi.uni-wuerzburg.de/~krasel/leafnode.html
and there is a leafnode mailing list; to subscribe, send mail with
"Subscribe" in the Subject: header to
        [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Many thanks to all the users who provided encouragement, criticism,
bug reports, patches and general comments. If your patch is not
present in this version, don't worry; I have not forgotten it. In
fact, a large number of patches has accumulated which will hopefully
lead to increased functionality in the future, so we can all look
forward to the next major release :-)

And here is the lsm entry:

Subject: Market Analysis System, version 1.0
Date: Thu, 15 Jul 1999 22:23:05 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

This is to announce version 1.0 of the Market Analysis System (MAS).
MAS is a client/server application that provides tools for analysis of
financial markets, with the goal of helping its user make better buying
and selling decisions and to help save time by automating some tasks
that would otherwise be done by hand.

MAS is released as free software, and is currently available at:

ftp://ftp.dimensional.com/users/jtc/mas

MAS has two main components: the Market Analysis System Server (also
known as Market Analysis Server) and the Market Analysis GUI Client.
The server provides the capability to apply technical analysis[1]
indicators to market data. Additionally, the server allows the user
to specify a set of criteria (using one more more technical indicators)
and apply those criteria to market data, generating buy and sell signals
for markets that meet the criteria.[2]

The current version of the MAS server runs on Linux/Intel systems.
The GUI Client is written in Java and should run on any system with a
Java runtime environment.

The Market Analysis GUI Client (MAGC) provides basic charting facilities,
using the server to obtain market and indicator data. MAGC currently
displays price data using either standard bar charts or candle charts.

MAS currently accepts daily stock and index data. In the future it will
probably be expanded to accept other kinds of data, such as futures data.

Below is a summary of MAS's features.

Market Analysis Server (MAS)

Functionality:

  - Includes several system-defined technical indicators.
  - Allows the user to create and save new technical indicators.
  - Handles stock splits.
  - Currently expects daily data.
  - Production of weekly data from daily data.
  - Allows user to create and save sets of market-analysis rules.
  - Analyzes market data using selected market-analysis rules.
  - Notification by email of buy and sell signals generated by market analysis.
  - Allows user to add registrants for email of market analysis results.
  - Provides services to GUI or command-line clients using a socket-based
    protocol.
  - One server process can service several GUI clients.

System-defined technical indicators:

  - Simple Moving Average
  - Exponential Moving Average
  - MACD Difference
  - MACD Signal Line (EMA of MACD Difference)
  - MACD Histogram
  - Momentum
  - Rate of Change
  - Williams %R
  - Stochastic %K
  - Stochastic %D
  - Slow Stochastic %D
  - Relative Strength Index

Current list of user-defined technical indicators:

  - On Balance Volume
  - Accumulation/Distribution

Current list of market-analysis rules:

  - Slow Stochastic %D - -> + slope change event
  - Slow Stochastic %D + -> - slope change event
  - Stochastic %D - -> + slope change event
  - Stochastic %D + -> - slope change event
  - Stochastic %K - -> + slope change event
  - Stochastic %K + -> - slope change event
  - MACD difference/signal crossover event - below to above
  - MACD difference/signal crossover event - above to below
  - [MACD difference/signal crossover event - below to above] / [Slow
    Stochastic %D - -> + slope change event]
  - [MACD difference/signal crossover event - above to below] / [Slow
    Stochastic %D + -> - slope change event]
  - [MACD difference/signal crossover event - below to above] / [Stochastic %D
    - -> + slope change event]
  - [MACD difference/signal crossover event - above to below] / [Stochastic %D
    + -> - slope change event]
  - [MACD difference/signal crossover event - below to above] / [Stochastic %K
    - -> + slope change event]
  - [MACD difference/signal crossover event - above to below] / [Stochastic %K
    + -> - slope change event]

Market Analysis GUI Client (MAGC)

Functionality:

Provides charts of market and indicator data.
Obtains market and indicator data from the server via a network connection.
Provides choice of candles or price bars.
Provides choice of daily or weekly data.
Allows user to run several windows at a time.

[1] For those not familiar with technical analysis, it is a set of
techniques for analyzing market data, using indicators such as trend
lines, moving averages, price momentum, oscillators, etc. to identify
changes in market trends. It is based on the observation that "prices
move in trends which are determined by the changing attitudes of investors
toward a variety of economic, monetary, political, and psychological
forces." ["Technical Analysis Explained," by Martin J. Pring]

[2] For example, I currently have my system configured to issue a buy
signal if Stochastic %D changes slope from negative to positive when
below 30 and, no more than 28 days before that, the weekly MACD difference
line crossed above the weekly MACD signal line. I have it configured to
issue a sell signal for the opposite event - Stochastic %D slope change
from positive to negative when above 70 and weekly MACD difference line
crosses below weekly MACD signal line. I have configured my system so
that this analysis is run each trading day after the end-of-day prices
are available. I find that this process saves me a lot of time that
would otherwise be spent filtering market data by hand.

Subject: HTMLView 0.6.1 - make web interfaces to relational SQL databases
Date: Thu, 15 Jul 1999 22:20:31 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

HTMLView is a set of modules to handle relational SQL databases
through a DBI interface and create web user interfaces to them. Among
it's features are the possibility to handle relations in the same
manner as fields and it is easily extended with additional field or
relation specifications as well as custom editors and viewers.

HTMLView contains a query language based on SQL, but extended to allow
easy inclusion of relations in the queries. Say you have a Users
table with an N2N relation, called grp, to a Groups table you can select
users from the Users table based on the name field in the Groups
table by selecting on grp->name (eg "grp->name = 'sudo'" would match
all users belonging to the group named sudo while "grp->gid = 27" would
match all users belonging to the group with gid 27).

There is also a fmt language used to specify how the data in a post
or a set of posts should be presented. It works in a template like way
with a html like format, and it can be specified on a PostSet, Post or
Relation/Field level.

It's most frequent use is that it allows you to write a fmt file and
in it place a "<node>...</node>" construct, which will repeat the
"..." part for every post that's supposed to be viewed. It can contain
"<fld name>" tags which will be replaced by the fld (field or relation)
named name. It's also possible to specify how that data in an fld
should be viewed by instead using the "<fmt name>...</fmt>" where
"..." is a new fmt string used to view the fld. This is especially
useful for relations as it allows you to specify exactly how the
related posts should be presented.

It's also possible to insert perl code that's executed using
"<perl>...</perl>" constructs. Se the README.fmt file for a complete
description of the language.

News in this version is:

 * Fixed bug preventing adding, and updating posts with no other fields
   than the id field.
 * Fixed bug that got fields from diffrent tabels with the same name
   mixed up when selecting related data. There still might be a
   problem when not selecting all fields of a post, then the not
   selected fields may show up as the fields with the same name from
   the other tabels that where selected.
 * Rewrote Test2.fmt to work with the new Formated2.cgi
 * Fixed bug in Formated2.cgi preventing the FLD param from working
 * Added Table::noid_list method

You'll find the distribution at CPAN in:

Or if the mirrors are not updated yet you can pick it up by ftp from

Subject: COMMERCIAL: Fastest chipsets, new support for Accelerated-X.
Date: Thu, 15 Jul 1999 21:56:29 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Xi Graphics has completed updates adding new desktop support for the
Matrox G400, 3dfx/STB Voodoo3-2000 and 3000, the Diamond Viper 770 Ultra
(nVidia Riva TNT2) and Diamond viper 550 (TNT) and adding the portable
computers HP Omnibook XE, Hitachi M120D, CTX EZBook 700G.

The fastest graphics board supported by Accelerated-X is now the Matrox
G400. The following benchmarks were obtained on a K6-II at 450MHz; we
expect that a Pentium processor clocking at the same speed will be
faster
as it can use MTRR which is not present in the K6-II support.

        TNT2 = Diamond Viper 770 Ultra
        TNT = Diamond Viper 550
        Voodoo3 = Voodoo3-3000

Xmark'93                8bpp            16bpp           24bpp
                1280x1024@85Hz  1280x1024@75Hz  1024x768@65Hz

Xaccel 5.0
Matrox G400 (16MB)      53              44              40
TNT2                    47              38              32
TNT                     43              35              30
Voodoo3                 47              41              35

An Xmark exceeding 40 usually means that opaque window moves are very
smooth at any resolution, the only visible glitching being caused by
other processes demanding lots of CPU or bus.

We were able to find support for the Diamond Viper 500 in XFree86 and
Xmetro. We were unable to make any other X servers work with the other
chips, even if support was claimed. XFree86 does not claim to support
24bpp color depth, so no benchmark was collectable.

        Diamond Viper 500 (nVidia Riva TNT)
Xmark'93                8bpp            16bpp           24bpp

Xaccel 5                43              35              30
XF86_SVGA 3.3.3.1       13              10              n/a
Xmetro                  6.8             4.9             4.1

Note that 2D support does not imply support for 3D hardware
acceleration. It is currently unlikely that either the Matrox G400 or
any 3dfx chips will be supported by the initial release of our hardware
accelerated OpenGL products. The fastest 3D chips in the lab are
currently the S3 Savage3D and AccelGraphics AccelGALAXY (E&S realImage).

The HP Omnibook XE (Silicon Motion SM810 chipset) is supported by an
update to the Laptop Accelerated-X Display Server version 5. The
SM810 was benchmarked in the HP system at full resolution on the LCD
panel:

Xmark'93        8bpp            16bpp           24bpp
Xaccel 5        13              10              8

Even in 8bpp this will be a slow display by comparison with current
desktops and leading portable computers (e.g. ATI Rage LT Pro gets
double the Xmark rating in the Fujitsu Lifebook 990TX2). We recommend
disabling opaque window moves. We were unable to find released or Work
In Progress support for the Silicon Motion chips, so we are unable to
publish comparison benchmarks.

The update is available from URL:

Hitachi M120-D

This portable uses the Cirrus Logic 7543 chip with 1MB graphics memory.
We were unable to test this machine at full screen resolution in 24bpp.

Xmark'93        8bpp
Xaccel 5        1.5

This will be a very slow display to use. We recommend disabling opaque
window moves and avoiding any applications that require fast updates
such as MPEG playback. Both MetroLink and XFree86 XF86_SVGA 3.3.3.1
claim to support this chip. We were unable to configure this display to
provide any visible support so no benchmarks could be taken.

The update is available from URL:

CTX EZBook 700G

This uses the Cyrix MediaGX chip with 1MB graphics memory. We were
unable to test this machine at full resolution in 24bpp.

Xmark'93        8bpp            16bpp
Xaccel 5        6.7             5.0

This will also be rather sluggish to display, but should be clearly
visibly faster than the Hitachi M120-D. We recommend disabling opaque
window moves and avoiding applications that need fast screen updates.
Both MetroLink and XFree86 XF86_SVGA 3.3.3.1 claim to support this
chip. We were unable to configure a reliable and visible display so
benchmark comparison is not possible.

You can now get xtrs version 3.7, a Radio Shack TRS-80 Model I/III/4/4P
emulator for Unix and the X Window System, from my TRS-80 Web page:

  http://www.research.digital.com/SRC/personal/Tim_Mann/trs80.html

Version 3.7 features a complete rewrite of the cassette and sound support,
and improvements to the disk import/export utilities. Cassette emulation
works on all models, and real cassettes can even be read and written (with
luck). Sound is now played with accurate pitch, and the implementation
uses the OSS sound driver instead of going directly to SoundBlaster hardware.
The utilities (other than hard disk emulation) now work on Model I/III
TRSDOS and Newdos/80 2.0, not just LDOS and Model 4 TRSDOS.

General xtrs blurb:

xtrs is a Radio Shack TRS-80 Model I/III/4/4P emulator for Unix and the
X Window System. It includes lower case, the real time clock, the Model
4 hi-res graphics option, mouse support, sound support (requires OSS),
cassette support, 5" and 8" floppy disk drives, and even hard disk drives.
Unlike many Model I emulators, xtrs supports double sided, double density
floppies, emulating both the Percom and Radio Shack Doubler. The emulated
floppy and hard disk file formats are compatible with the popular MSDOS-based
emulators by Jeff Vavasour, Matthew Reed, and David Keil, and (if you
choose a capable enough file format), all features of the original TRS-80
floppy disk controller are emulated. Under Linux, physical floppy disk
drives are also supported. Physical cassettes can even be read and written
(when the phase of the moon is right). The user interface is a bit spartan,
but it gets the job done.
