        What level is the NT computer at?  If you are at NT4.0 SP3 or higher,
(which you really REALLY should be at - SP3 was a major security fix-up)
you may be tripping over some security or protocol hardening that doesn't
exist in 95/98 (hell - they got no security anyways - why bother!)

        When you say smbclient works, what version of Samba was the source
of the smbclient program...

        BTW...  With 2.0.35, you should not be using the smbmount from
Samba, you should be using the smbmount from the smbfs package (which you
appear to be doing).  The Samba version of smbmount is for the smbfs in
the 2.1 kernels.

        OTOH...  If you ARE running into security conflicts with that NT box,
the 2.1 kernels may be your only option...

        Win98 may also have some of the recent protocol changes that went
into NT 4.0 SP3 and later hot fixes.  It should, however, either just plain
work or just plain not work.  Working 50% of the time doesn't make sense.
What are the errors you get when it doesn't.
