Doesn't Slackware use LPRng?  As I recall, LPRng always had problems
with apsfilter.  There was a special version of apsfilter that you had
to use.  I started using magicfilter, instead.  Have you tried the
latest version of apsfilter?  I thought that it had been rewritten in
Perl.  Also, what version of a2ps are you using?
