I know the problem precisely (and painfully too:)
Two ways out of this.
1. Configure sendmail to reverse alias both your username and
hostname.
2. Configure (n)mh to change the username and hostname (don't have the
details handy right now, but I could dig this info up).
How to do this in the way that you were wanting might be a bit tricky
though, but I suspect that it is still possible to do it.
