As others have mentioned, there are numerous solutions available
for Linux on Intel:

- StarOffice
- WordPerfect
- Applix
- Wine
- Wabi

However, Linux != Intel, and for those of us on other platforms
(I primarily use Sparc Linux) none of those solutions are appropriate.

You could try looking for a program called word2x, which converts
Word 6 and below documents to text or LaTeX. For Word 97, you can
use MSWordView, which converts to HTML, which can then be converted
to your favourite format by other means. It's not perfect, but for
what I've needed, it's been good enough, and it's being actively
developed, so it's getting better all the time.
