You might want to look at ELK - it's an attempt at making an "embedded"
linux capable of running on control-type CPUs, often with minimal RAM and
horsepower.
Any chance you could upgrade the RAM to at least 4 MB? Then you'd have a
perfectly good platform for minimal linux!
