Ok, if you don't have a loose-modem...

LOOK at the log files. In fact, do this:

$ cat >> /etc/syslog.conf
kern.*;local2.*         /var/log/messages
kern.*;local2.*;*.*     /dev/tty12
^D
$ killall -HUP syslogd

(This appends to the syslogd config file, the Ctrl-D stops the
appending. The HUP signal to syslogd restarts it. Now you have all
your syslogs going to tty12, use Ctrl-LeftAlt-F12 to see them).

To get the ppp login/password stuff happening, you need to add to do
this:

$ /usr/sbin/pppd name myname

and have an name/password entry in /etc/ppp/{chap,pap}-secrets for
"myname".

There are much more elegant ways to do it with the "call" parameter to
pppd, but that's the guts of it.

Ctrl-LeftAlt-F12 will quickly become your friend.

Cheers
Tony
