You might want to try something simple like minicom or seyon to see if you
can communicate with the modem. If you can, and you can issue an ATDT
command and hear it dialing out, I would say the problem is not the modem.
In particular, try dialing your ISP. You should connect, and get a login
prompt. Try putting in your name and password. You should get gobbledigook
(the ppp stuff). If you get "login incorrect", the problem is with your
login name/password. If you don't get a login prompt, or you don't connect,
the problem is probably the modem.
