X is the de facto standard, but its memory footprint is larger than
microwindows. However, it might be faster to write directly to the
frame buffer and do without a windowing system.

Under X, any X video program will do (Xawtv, for example).

For X use the frame buffer server from XFree86 4.0.3. Jim Gettys
slimmed it down for use on handheld devices.

Video for linux should do. It's the standard on linux.

Hardware. I suppose you somehow have a video device connected to your
Assabet and wrote a kernel device driver for it. If not: no, a USB
video camera doesn't work because the Assabet is not a USB host.
