There seems to be some kind of funny at the moment that makes the kernel go 
wrong when it's built with the current gcc 2.95-branch sources (even with 
-fno-strict-aliasing).  I haven't managed to work out yet whether the bug 
is in gcc or the kernel.

But yes, in most respects it should be a whole lot better than egcs 1.1.x.
