so you're proposal is to create a software mixer, reading from the
inputs, delivering to the outputs, but via a gain stage, right ?

you should be able to do this in a week if you reuse the code from
ardour. the actual i/o part should take less than a day. that leaves
6-1/2 days for dealing with ncurses :)
