Ah, well, I suspect thats not just down to architecture, the single cpu
box is a little used login machine with a fast fileserver to hand over all
its data, whereas the dual cpu machine is my desktop box which is runing
X, a fairly busy webserver, an ontology server, a database and god knows
what else.

Sadly I don't have root on any single cpu linux boxes that aren't being
thrashed right now.
