and then there are sounds that have their own "natural" length. my
kawai k5000 which does additive and wavetable synthesis has quite a
few patches that have "natural" decay/release curves built into the
patch. a note off does nothing but terminate the sound early. if you
don't send a note off, the voice will still decay, but it will hog one
of the available voice slots.
