maybe you're not filtering enough? i was just reading about the Ibanez TubeScreamer circuit, its clipping stage is quite interesting. http://www.geofex.com/Article_Folders/TStech/tsxtech.htm There's a pair of parallel diodes in the negative feedback loop (rather than across the output), and there's a cap and resistor in series from the neg. input to ground forming a highpass filter (that is, there's less negative feedback from high freqs so the circuit gets higher gain at high freqs).
