for the hdsp series, RME had *no* written documentation at all except their existing driver source code. i have come across other h/w devices where there is no documentation. RME is basically a 2 person shop on the technical side of things - a h/w guy and a s/w guy who sit in the same room and go back and forth on "how does this ...", "why doesn't this ...", "this seems not to ..." etc.
