soundfont with fluidsynth. What's the problem? You're editing and playing using two different implementations of the filters, modulation, etc... The two
Wrong, swami uses fluidsynth itself.
are unlikely to sound the same, or even close to the same. Soundfonts weren't really designed for the kind of precise sampler control you get with a real hardware sampler, or kontakt, where you can cut/loop samples exactly where you want (and do so without leaving your production environment), and route modulation and effects on the fly.
Weren't they? I don't see why can't you do those things provided you modify the existing software.
1) is both easier and gets you access to more software (other VSTs). 2) has the benefit of finally freeing myself from proprietary software completely, which I'd love to do. I'm happy to tackle (2) with help, but that would certainly require a lot of help.
Let's talk about it, then. I like Kontakt a lot, too, but emulation is bound to always be problematic. There are nowadays two open source major sampling engines: linuxsampler and fluidsynth. Both are suitable to the task, but fluid is no longer being actively developed (big pity, that). I already went superficially through fluid sources am and now playing around with LS. It is not that far away, I think. Luis
