While I tend to agree that Linux needs to adapt to better handle things as trivial as a screen saver in order to give Linux deeper penetration into the Desktop OS Market. I also think your statement ties the survivability of Linux with its ability to take over the Desktop Market. I don't think we need Linux to do that in order to be able to keep using it ourselves. Without the users, programmers and developers that we are all a part of, Linux would not exist or be able to continue.
