You might like FTE. It's an editor built for virtual consoles,
written in C++. I played with it a little (had to patch it to
handle ALT-<left-arrow> and ALT-<right-arrow> for console-switching),
but I'm a vi guy at heart...
My URL has rotted away, but I found some at
http://www.castrop-rauxel.netsurf.de
/homepages/m.hussmann/linux/software.html#edit
and
http://www.xnet.com/~blatura/textonly.shtml
which have links to many editors, and say that it's at
http://ixtas.fri.uni-lj.si/~markom/fte/
Good luck, and let us know what you settle on...

I have been looking a comfortable editor for Linux for a quite
long time now. The most promising I have found is Zed
(http://space.tin.it/io/saserafi). However, it's not exactly what
I want.
