I currently have a problem entering passwords in Linux (Slackware 2.0.35).
If I start with 'addusers' to create a new users account, it seems to
accept the password entered, but then won't let the user log in. A check
of the passwd file shows that an 'x' is in the place where the password
should be.
As well, using 'passwd name' to change a password, the entries appear to
be accepted but when it comes to save it I get back the message "Cannot
lock the password file; try again later".
I wonder what is going on? Where should I look?
