multiple ethernet NICs

I'm trying to configure Slakware 3.4, kernal 2.0.30 for 2 ethernet
cards.  Card eth0 is a 3Com 3C905 10/100 nic, with support compiled into
the kernal, and it does fine.  eth1 is an SMC card using the 83c690
chipset.

I've tried adding support into the kernal and as a module.  I *think*
I've said the right incantations for the card in /etc/donf.modules and
in /usr/rc.d/rc.inet1

I'm now at wits end.  Suggestions?
