In Linux, at least in the 2.0 kernels, it would appear that the maximum userid
length is hard-coded to be 8. The file "/usr/include/posix1_lim.h" contains the
line (remember to subtract 1 for the trailing null byte):
#define _POSIX_LOGIN_NAME_MAX 9
and there is nothing in the kernel to override it.
While it's hard-coded in Linux, it can be different in other variants of UNIX.
It could, of course, also become variable in future Linux kernels. These are
the facts which you must consider when deciding whether or not you want to rely
on 8 as a fixed value.
