I thought the move to libc6 allowed arbitrary length
userids?  Long userids seem to be supported in the
latest releases of Redhat and Debian.

I use a long userid on a Debian system I administer.
It's "arichardson".  (And more than 8 chars are significant
because I've also got an "arichards")  I know the long userid
can cause problems with mailers, but I use it
because it matches my userid on an NT system which
I don't administer.  Having the same userid and
passwd on both makes samba file/print sharing
between these two systems seamless.
