I don't understand where this conversation is coming from!  If the modem
is configured to give a connect rate with the CONNECT message (see the docs
for the X register settings for any Haydes-compat modem), the chat will
report the connect speed.

You just might need to force chat to wait for a second or two (with a `\d')
in order to get it, and you'll also need to make sure that you have syslogd
configured to capture the local2.* messages that chat gives it.  But chat
can capture the connect speeds, no problems...  I know - because I do it
all the time!
