Are you telnetting through a masquerade or other firewall? If your
workstation's name is Fred, your DISPLAY will be "Fred:0.0". But if the
machine you're telnetting to can't resolve the name "Fred" to your IP
address, then maybe you should try changing your DISPLAY variable before
you telnet. Like so:
export DISPLAY=<your IP address here>:0.0
If you're telnetting through a PPP connection, then this IP address might
be different every time, but you can look it up like so:
ifconfig ppp0
