1) make config
2) make dep
3) make clean
4) make zImage OR make bzImage    (See readme in /usr/src/linux)
5) cd /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot
6) stick a blank formated floppy in drive a
7) dd if=zImage bs=8192 of=/dev/fd0
8) after image is written to the floppy wright protect it and reboot your
system from it.
9) if everything seems to work as expected...
10) back up your original kernel (probably /vmlinuz or sumat like that)
11) copy your new kernel from  /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot to /vmlinuz 
(or whatever) then rerun lilo (or whatever bootloader your useing) to
update it.
12) if all is well you should now be able to boot from hard drive as
usual..

(Your milage may vary but this works for me on a slackware based system
and i dont think redhat is much different in this regard)
